Mercy bit her lip, desperate to keep from laughing as Emily’s jaw fell open. Her friend’s face turned a bright shade of red. She jumped up from her chair and started for the door. “You know what? I think I’ll take my chances with the fairies.”

  Fenrir followed.

One by one, the rest of the exiles filtered out of the room, until only James remained. They didn’t go far. She could still hear their voices murmuring in the hallway, no doubt discussing their next step.

“Emily’s right, you know,” James said, combing his fingers through her hair. “The next few weeks are going to be even more dangerous. Now that Oberon knows we’re going to fight back, he’ll send everything he has after us. It would probably be best for you to get away from the city for a while.”

“You know I’m not going to do that,” Mercy said, crossing her arms.

“I could make you,” he said, a devious sparkle twinkling in his eye.

“I’d like to see you try,” she said. “This is my battle too. There’s no way I’m going to run away and leave you to fight alone. You should know me better than that.”

“I do,” he said, with a sigh. “But you’re wrong. This isn’t your war.”

Mercy shook her head. “Of course it is. It became mine the second I let you into my heart. I’d fight a thousand fairy soldiers before I’d let you go.”

James’ wide smile spread across his face. He traced his fingers down the column of her neck as he leaned closer and pressed his lips to hers. “And I’d fight a thousand more before I’d let anything take you away.”
